Muskoka's Flagship Resort at a Glance
ESTABLISHED: 1896 by Englishman Charles Waterhouse with 18 rooms, for a then primarily American clientele arriving by steamship.
GENERAL MANAGER: Joseph Klein (since December 2005.)
EXECUTIVE CHEF: Rory Golden, Certified Chef de Cuisine, who produces maple syrup, honey, herbs and mushrooms, and harvests wild leeks, sumac and edible cat tails on the resort’s grounds.
LOCATION: Just two hours and two turns north of Toronto, in the lakeside tourism region of Muskoka, commonly referred to regionally as “cottage country,” 30 minutes east of Algonquin Provincial Park.
GUEST ROOMS: 400 with a guest capacity of 1,000; rates ranging seasonally by room type from CDN $109 to $699, plus a wide variety of packages.
ACCOMMODATION: Hotel rooms, junior one-bedroom suites, and 1, 2 and 3 bedroom condo-style units, with full kitchens, fireplaces etc.
CONFERENCE FACILITIES: 45,000 square feet (4,200 m2) of interior venues, with two ballrooms including the Peninsula Room overlooking the lake, plus unique exterior settings including the BBQ Point and Gazebo.
PROPERTY SIZE: 780 acres (316 hectares.)
PRIVATE AIRSTRIP: 3,000 foot (914 m) paved runway.
DINING: Eclipse, Maple Grill & Gathering Place, the Lobby Bar, seasonal outlets like the Lounge at Highlands and Pool Deck, as well as take-away/ delivery in compostable containers for in-room dining.
CULINARY: Only resort in North America that produces both its own maple syrup and wild flower honey right on resort property.
SPA: The 3,000 square foot (280 m2) Spa at Deerhurst uses top environmentally friendly product lines including Pevonia, La Biosthetique, Jane Iredale and Zoya.
ENTERTAINMENT: LIVE at Deerhurst currently presents Decades, a pop music revenue of hits from the 1950s to 2010. Now in its 29th year, Deerhurst’s show is Canada’s longest running stage production and once featured Shania Twain.
GOLF: Two 18-hole courses, the forerunner of Muskoka’s emergence as a major golf destination, Deerhurst Highlands (par 72), and Deerhurst Lakeside (par 64), plus a highly rated Golf Academy and innovative programs including children’s golf and Kids Play Free as well as new corporate teambuilding and themed events like the Tee Party.
RECREATION: Indoor Sports Facility with squash and tennis courts, fitness facility and pool; beachfront inflatable Splash Zone, water sports including boat tours and rentals; horseback riding, carriage and pony rides; hiking and biking trails; Bionx power assist bike rentals, off-road Hummer tours and rocky buggy rentals; guided Algonquin Park tours; and paintball. Sleigh rides, skating, dog sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing, snowmobiling, and downhill skiing at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area (just next door.)
MAJOR EVENTS: Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships (January); Good as Gold Canadian National Women’s Hockey Team golf fundraiser (July); Muskoka Ironman 70.3 (September); concerts by Johnny Reid and Chantal Kreviazuk (2009), Holly Cole and upcoming Kathleen Edwards (2010); host venue of the 2010 G8 Summit of world leaders June 24 to 26, 2010.
