ARRIVALS
Welcome to Deerhurst, you are cleared for landing… N45º 21.2’ W79º 09.1’. Those coordinates may not mean anything to most people. But they are critical information for pilots and their passengers flying into Deerhurst Resort. Deerhurst operates its own private airstrip for guests of the resort. The airstrip is just over 3,000 feet long by 60 feet wide and can accommodate most light, single and twin engine planes, up to a Dash Seven. Please let Deerhurst know you’re coming at least 24 hours in advance. US flyers are most welcome, just be sure to notify Canada Customs of your AOE (airport of entry) prior to take-off. You can contact Customs at 1-888-CAN-PASS.
FLASHBACK
Tourists have been coming to Muskoka’s peaceful lakes since the 1870s. And although it doesn’t look it, Deerhurst Resort is well over a century old. In 1896 the aptly named Charles Waterhouse, son of a Yorkshire lawyer, built a summer inn with 18 bedrooms, a dining room, a smoking lounge and a veranda overlooking Peninsula Lake. The Lodge is still here, its central space now functions as Deerhurst’s theatre, home to Canada’s longest running stage show. A total of 26 buildings with over 400 accommodations and 40,000 square feet of event space have grown up around it. Deerhurst Resort has continued to make history, from launching Shania Twain’s recording career in the late 1980s to hosting both the first Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships and Canada’s first ESPN Golf Schools in 2006.
STAR POWER
Everyone loves a great success story and Deerhurst Resort is proud to have played a part in Shania Twain’s rise to super stardom. Everyone knows she was born in Timmins, ON, but Muskoka is like a second home to Shania who performed in the Deerhurst show for three years. It was at Deerhurst that she was discovered by a Nashville talent agent. Then in 1993 she married uber-producer and writer Robert John “Mutt” Lange (the man behind Def Leppard, the Backstreet Boys, the Corrs and seven of the 100 most successful rock records of all time) at the resort. In media interviews, Shania has often referred to Deerhurst as “a special place” for her. A few years ago, Shania suggested returning to the resort for the taping of an NBC-TV special with Katie Couric. And her Deerhurst years returned to the small screen again in 2006 during a biographical CBC-TV movie.
SPORTING LIFE
Imagine playing Capture the Flag while dodging shots and trying to nail
the opposing team. If you haven’t taken a shot yet, that's what paintball is, a running-and-evading game played with air-powered guns that shoot dye-filled capsules instead of bullets. It’s also the newest summer activity at Deerhurst Resort. Get ready to aim and fire in a demarcated forest area near the resort’s private airstrip. And don’t worry about messing up your vacation wardrobe – protective suits and facemasks are provided.
