| December 10 event raises funds for Salvation Army Food Bank and top business’s charity of choice
HUNTSVILLE, November 22, 2006 – Deerhurst Resort is seeking entries for its first annual Building Hope charity gingerbread house decorating contest on Sunday, December 10.
“Yes, this competition is about cookies, icing, candy and creativity,” said Joseph Klein, Deerhurst’s General Manager. “We’re inviting our community to come out, have fun and get into the holiday spirit.”
“This is also a time of cold and hunger for some Muskoka residents. So we want to encourage everyone to join us in helping make the season brighter for those in need.”
Participants will compete in two categories: Families with children up to age 12 who will build their houses on-site, and businesses or organizations who can pre-construct their creations in advance and will compete for a $250 donation to their charity of choice.
There is a $7 entry fee per house. Raffle tickets to win a gingerbread house made by a Deerhurst chef will also be sold for $1. Five dollars from each entry fee and all raffle ticket proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army Food Bank. Attendees can also drop off non-perishable food items for the bank.
For each family house purchased, Deerhurst will supply the pre-made walls and roof, plus icing and trimmings to create that edible dream home, beach house or getaway chalet of your imagination. Basic tools like toothpicks and table knives will be supplied. Participants are also welcome to bring along their own small implements like scissors, paring knives or angled spatulas.
Local celebrity judges will choose the family gingerbread house winners based on creativity, use of decorations and overall festive appeal. Prizes will include Eclipse Sunday Brunch, a day of lift tickets at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area and other seasonal treats.
Business entries will be judged based on a People’s Choice vote throughout the afternoon with the charity donation cheque going to the company or team that builds the best Winter in Muskoka scene.
Business entries are not limited to houses. But the entire structure must be edible and affixed to a base no larger than 30 inches (76 cm) by 30 inches or a 24-inch (61 cm) circle. It must also be freestanding, with no running water or electricity requirements.
The contest opens at 2:00 p.m. in Deerhurst’s Peninsula Ballroom with prize presentation at 4:30 p.m. Prizewinning entries will remain on display at the resort throughout the holiday season.
During the event, a gingerbread village recreating several Deerhurst landmarks will also be on display. And a Deerhurst pastry chef will be demonstrating decorating tips and techniques. So you can stop by to watch and pick up helpful hints from a pro.
Gingerbread decorating spaces are limited. To register your family or business call the resort’s Activities Desk at 789-6411 or visit the website www.deerhurstresort.com/gingerbread for full details
