Take to the skies and watch the waves on Canada day

Deerhurst Resort Celebrates Canada’s 140th Birthday with Water Show and Beaver Flights

HUNTSVILLE, ON., June 25, 2007 – This year, make a splash for Canada Day with Deerhurst Resort’s water ski show, vintage bush plane rides and the flag-waving new production “Canada Rocks”.

“Deerhurst has been part of summer traditions since 1896,” notes General Manager Joseph Klein. “For our country’s 140th birthday we’re sharing some other classic Canadian pursuits, like getting out on the water, exploring and enjoying great music.”

That includes the chance to watch a water ski display featuring wakeboarding, ski jumping and barefoot performers, as well as a brand-new tribute to this nation’s thriving music scene, “Canada Rocks” produced by the choreographer for “Canadian Idol.”

But the most visible star of Sunday’s shows will be a 1949 de Havilland Beaver, the rugged little post-World War II monoplane that has become an enduring symbol of the Canadian North while ferrying people and cargo to isolated spots around the world.

Despite the fact that production ceased in 1967, several hundred Beavers are still flying. Beyond the backcountry, they are popular with movie directors, tour operators, and in the case of this particular Muskoka Golf Airways floatplane, golfers keen to “tee off and take off”.

Fitting a proud Canadian icon, it’s the most liberating kind of flying. You can fly very low over water and see the sights. And the essence of float flying is access to wilderness.

July 1st flights offering a moment of Canadian history and a bird’s-eye view of Muskoka’s lakes will depart from Deerhurst’s docks starting at 10:00 a.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m. The free water show starts at 7:00 p.m. And a special performance of Canada Rocks kicks off at 8:00 p.m. in the resort’s Lodge Showroom.
