Deerhurst resort Makes a splash with Family Friendly wakeboarding weekend

August 24-26 X-CUP and Nautique Boaters' Reunion will pull fans to Muskoka's Peninsula Lake

HUNTSVILLE, ON., July 19, 2007 - Requests for wake-up calls are a daily routine at this 800-acre lakeside retreat just two hours from Toronto.  But Muskoka’s Deerhurst Resort is getting ready for a different kind of “wake’s up” when it hosts its first X-CUP Wakeboarding Weekend and Nautique Reunion, August 24-26.

Riding the crest of wakeboarding’s surging popularity, the event includes Saturday’s final event of the 2007 X-CUP tournament series and a Sunday reunion for owners and fans of Correct Craft Nautique boats, a leader in wakeboarding watercraft.  Trials and discounted practice sessions, supplier booths, a barbeque and awards’ night will round out the Peninsula Lake waterfront fun.

While wakeboarding first earned its reputation as an “extreme” sport, organizer Eric Snidal of Muskoka’s Pride Marine Group, confirms that these days it’s also evolved into a family affair.

“Lots of seating on these boats means everyone can have the freedom of being out on the water and the laid-back lifestyle that comes with wakeboarding. It’s simple for anyone to try, from pre-teens to adults.  You pick up the basics in a single season.  Then, as you get better, you can learn all these different levels of tricks.”

Wakeboarding is done at lower speeds than water skiing, making it easier to keep one's balance and less tiring to learn. And since most teenagers don’t own boats, “they still count on their parents.” Snidal notes.

Deerhurst Resort Director of Sports Mark O’Dell thinks both spectators and participants will be excited by the grabs, spins, flips and “raleys” of tricks like the Butterslide, 911 and Canadian Bacon.

“Deerhurst is a great setting for anyone interested in wakeboarding to come out and get their feet wet, show off the stuff they’ve learned this summer or just chill at the beach,” says O’Dell.

“Like golf, horseback riding and paintball, wakeboarding is another reason to come to our Muskoka and make the most of a weekend.”

WAKING LIFE Deerhurst Resort’s weekend on the water is open to the public.  X-CUP wakeboarding in categories from “newbe” to “wakeskate” runs throughout the day on Saturday, August 25 with the Nautique boaters’ reunion starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, August 26.  Get details and weekend stay specials at www.deerhurstresort.com or 1-800-461-4393.  To register for the all-ages competition visit www.xcup.ca.
