Add Some Sugar and Spice to Holidays with Deerhurst Resort’s Charity Gingerbread Contest
Huntsville, ON., December 3, 2007 – Deerhurst Resort is seeking entrants for its second annual Building Hope Charity Gingerbread House Day on Sunday, December 16.
All proceeds from the growing contest will benefit the Salvation Army Food Bank and the top group entry’s charity of choice.
“The key ingredients to creating these gingerbread houses are more than candy canes, gum drops and frosting,” says Deerhurst General Manager Joseph Klein.
“It’s about sharing the spirit of the holiday season and building hope for members of our community that need some help.”
At least 50 children and 10 businesses, schools and groups are expected to enter this year’s event, held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Deerhurst’s Peninsula Ballroom.
In return for a $10 entry donation, kids receive all their decorating supplies on-site. Group entries should be pre-built and brought to the resort for judging.
“Of course, groups are also welcome to complete their final assembly here at the resort,” according to Klein. “That might save a bit of stress from driving here over a snowy road and losing all those sprinkles on the back seat.”
Individual awards will recognize best holiday spirit, most creative, best attempt and best overall, as well as the coveted people’s choice.
“They’re not all Hansel and Gretel gingerbread houses,” notes Deerhurst Executive Chef and construction expert Rory Golden. “But taste-testing the candy and getting creative is all part of the fun.”
Prizes include a family brunch, Hidden Valley Highlands ski passes and other cool treats, while the winning group entry will earn $250 for their designated charity.
Deerhurst will also be collecting donations of non-perishable goods and raffling a jaw-dropping gingerbread house created by their pastry shop chefs to boost Food Bank supplies.
To register children or a group entry, please call (705) 789-6411.
We’re creating a new holiday tradition and we want the public to come out to Deerhurst and join us,” notes Klein. “Let’s raise the roof for charity and have a very sweet afternoon.”
