Music in Muskoka

Johnny Reid, Chantal Kreviazuk headline fall weekend breaks at Deerhurst

HUNTSVILLE, ON, August 2009 – Muskoka's Deerhurst Resort may be better known for family vacations and golf trips.  But starting this fall, the landmark lakeside retreat is showcasing its entertainment value with a string of concert weekend getaways.

First-up is Scotland-born, Ontario-raised and Nashville-based Johnny Reid, who plays Deerhurst September 18.

Right now, the musically unclassifiable singer-songwriter is about as hot as Canadian music gets.

Reid, the 34-year-old father of three and self-proclaimed son of a blue collar immigrant, leads this year's Canadian Country Music award nominees with six nods.

His newest album, Dance With Me, was released March 10, reaching gold status in less than 48 hours and matching his two previous platinum recordings, 2005's Born to Roll and 2007's Kickin' Stones in achieving the 100,000 sales mark – just eight weeks later.

Reid has already won two CCMA awards, including top male artist, in 2008, and garnered a Juno nomination.

But, more than growing fame, it's Reid's wide-ranging appeal and showmanship that will draw a crowd to Deerhurst, or any other venue he plays, from major festivals to small town halls.

“Maybe he’s labelled a country musician, but Johnny and his fan base are much bigger,” confirms Deerhurst Director of Sales Clee Varon.

“His songs about family, friends and living mix perfectly with a Muskoka escape.  And they can speak to anyone, anywhere.”

When Reid takes the stage at Deerhurst next month, expect notes of soul, blues, rock and funk underscored by his trademark Scottish brogue.  The eclectic concert will feature new hits as well as the cheerful mandolin and fiddle propelled Out of the Blue, and simple, heartfelt ballads like Thank You.

Whether it's plaid scarf wearing members of his  fan club,  the Tartan Army, or someone looking for some R&R away, Johnny Reid in Muskoka will be  “one of his real, 110 percent shows," promises Varon.

Deerhurst's Johnny Reid concert package wraps up admission, overnight accommodation and breakfast from $149 per person based on double occupancy.  For bookings call 1-800-461-4393 or visit deerhurstresort.com/johnnyreid

On November 14, Deerhurst welcomes Juno-winning songstress Chantal Kreviazuk for a show featuring selections from her new recording, Plain Jane, as well as favourite hits.  The concert is a highlight of the downtown Huntsville Girlfriends' Getaway weekend featuring pre-holiday shopping, workshops and a fashion show with W Network Style by Jury hosts Bruce Turner and David Klemmer.  To book Deerhurst's complete two-night Girlfriends' Getaway package call 1-800-461-4393.

About Deerhurst Two hours and two turns north of Toronto,  Deerhurst  Resort is a year-round leisure and conference destination featuring two 18-hole golf courses including the acclaimed Deerhurst Highlands, teambuilding, a spa, live show, and the most on-site activities of any resort in Eastern Canada.  A founding member of the Savour Muskoka culinary trail, Deerhurst is the only resort in North America producing its own maple syrup and honey on-site.  From June 25-27, 2010, Deerhurst will host the G8 Summit of world leaders.
